The Heritages from Ancient Greece

Ahrweiler said:” Europe is a world of historical references and memories shared by all Europeans who draw sustenance from their teachings.” I think this is maybe an excellent answer why the great heritages of Ancient Greece now still can shape the European world, building up the European Identity.
Historically, European world was occupied by the Rome Empire, at the same time; Romans inherited the legacies of Greece. What's more, the influence of Greece did not end after the collapse of Rome Empire but kept spreading all around Europe. The roots of these treasures were so deep that they appeared several big historical events like the Renaissance and the Enlightment.
Under a comfortable climate, people of ancient Greece gave birth to a great civilization which was very distinguished from other part of world at that time.
Unlike other monarchy countries, Greece, especially in Athens, developed a unique structure of politics. Monarch was abolished, and reforms of Solon established a moderate system of aristocratic government. After that the democracy was established, with power being held by 40,000 free citizens. But, the democracy at that time can not be compared to modern day democracy. The Greek society was a male-dominant one, and women, foreigners, slaves were excluded from power. So, critically, it is not precise to say the engendering of western democracy was due to the practice of ancient Greek democracy but the idea of democracy they discussed.
Not only the democracy was past down, but many advanced ideas, the liberty of human beings, the social harmony of bringing together different people and various ideas and so on all, are also accepted by Europeans.
Another unparallel achievement of ancient Greece was the science which later greatly shaped the way of European thinking, and searching for truth. In Greece, the concept of science was not the one narrowly encompass physics, biology, but a one has a wide range of elements, even the philosophy.
In the eyes of ancient Greeks, the world around them is not chaos but is beautiful and ordered. Nature has its own order and rule to run and everything inside the nature must obey the rule of nature even the Gods. As a human, Greeks proudly convinced that nature can be exploited by human reasoning. Among these people, the most outstanding examples are Plato and Aristotle, although somewhat their concepts were opposite. Plato considered that the universe released by our sense is not the real one but some poor and imperfect imaged of ideas. People must use logical reasoning to get to know the ideas. On contrary, Aristotle suggested using observation and inductive reasoning to arrive at categories and principles based on our sense data. Any way, it is the fact that it is their ideas laid the foundation of western philosophy. What’s more, both of them contributed a lot to the fields like physics and biology, mathematics. For instance, the geocentric view of Aristotle pointed out that the earth is in the centre of universe, although it has already made no sense nowadays, there is no denying that the attempts he made was quite magnificent.
Since the ancient time, European adopted their way of looking and exploiting the world, even today, Europeans schools are still teaching the philosophy of ancient Greece.
Of course, not only the politics and Greek science post a very important role in formation of European Identity, but other parts too.
The cornerstone of European literature is the work from ancient Greece, especially the masterpieces of Iliad and Odyssey, which take the form of epic poetry. And the dramas from Greece now still fascinated 21centry Europeans and people all around the world.
The arts of ancient Greece inspired great number of artist of Europe to follow. It is very easy to find sculptures, statues and wall painting in Greek style. More important, European accept the concept of beauty rooted in ancient Greece.
The creek civilization was such a brilliant and dazzling one whose heritages: freedom of man, liberty, democracy of politics, even the alphabets, arts, architectures and the concepts of beauty, laid the foundation of European Identity and will continue functioning as a strong power for building up the European Identity.

Lady of Europe

Obviously, it is quite hard for me to recognize this picture as the map of Europe, but, it is! Just simply change the way of seeing......or maybe another way is finding out a normal map of Europe then compare them...haha,simple!
But why Europe is a lady?
In fact there was no saying of Europe in the beginning. Europa was the subjectof one of the most venerable legends of the classical world. She was mentioned by Homer, the greatest poet in the history. But in the fate of "Europa and the Bull", she was immortalized as an innocent princess seduced by the Father of the Gods:Zeus. Zeus was absorbed by her beauty and transferred himself into a bull. Wandering with her maidens along the shore of her native Phoenicia, she was beguiled by Zeus.
The fact is that the story has many connotations.
Europa rode in the path of the sun from east to west. Indeed, one of several possible etymoligies contrast Asia, "the land of the Sunrise", with Europa," the Land of the Sunset". The Hellenes came to use "Europe" as a name for their territory to the west of the Aegean.

the Concept of Resurrection from Ancient Egypt

Recently, I translated a passage from a website which listed the mistakes appeared in the movie: Mummy. It was the fact that the misunderstandings of knowledge of ancient Egypt were quite a lot, one of which was the concept of resurrection in ancient Egyptian standard.
In the movie of Mummy, the bad guys tried to wake Imohotep by using the Book of the Dead. As a result, people seems to understand the purpose of waking the deceased is to allow the dead to have the earthly life again. But in fact, the purpose is opposing. The resurrection from ancient Egyptian standard is gaining the afterlife. People mummified the dead for his afterlife but not for earthly life.
To interpret the conception of resurrection, four important elements must be brought out: the body, the Ka and the Ba, also the name. These four elements are crucial for the resurrection.
The resurrection in ancient Egypt is understood as the reunion of the body and the Ka and the Ba.
For the body, it is mummified by embalmers to creat an eternal body. The aim of mummification is not only for the preservation but also for a perfect image of the dead and also for a place to house the Ba and the Ka. Let me recall the image of the mummy of Tutankhamun, it was characterized by anthropoid coffins, brilliant white wrappings, the golden face anf hands and so on. Obviously he was made God. So, from the example of Tutankhamun, we can see that the divine elements are added into the mummification.
To understand the concepts of the Ba and the Ka is quite difficult, for it is hard for scholars to find proper words for the interpretation of these two concepts.
The Ka, al well as the person, are understood as a twin. The Ka is there with the birth of a person and the Ka has no physical appearance. So, in most cases, Ka needs a physical container, body or statues, in the literacy, Ka is represented by the upraised arms.
Tha Ka sometime is associated with the reproduction, that means the male potency. But in the funerary culture, Ka is related to the life force, that means the sustenance. While the person is alive, he can feed the Ka on his own, but when he is dead, the feeding thing is impossible for him, so offerings must be made to the dea to ensure the continuous life agter death and also to gain the rebirth. To get the offerings, the Ka must have a physical tool for receiving the food, so a statue have to place besides the table of offerings. Without the offerings, the Ka can no longer life, the possiblity of rebirth is omitted.
The Ba, varied from time to time and also depend on whether it is the Ba of a God or a King or a commoner. The easiest understanding is the Ba of commoner, everyone has a Ba-spirit. Like human, the Ba speak, eat, drink, and move. It is presented by a human-headed bird which can fly away and visit the world of living, but it must return to the body in the night. A easy way to get the idea of Ba is to think in a way of dualism: body and soul.
Last the name,it is much easier to understand. The importance of the name is equal to the body and Ka and Ba. It is a mean to gain rebirth as long as the name is remembered. The idea was interpreted into the myth and arts of ancient Egypt. The story of Isis and Ra, the painting on the wall which must contain the image and the name.
Above all, I state the four elements of gaining rebirth. Each one is important for the dead. If the dead can reunited those four parts, he can continue to live beyond death.
You are Amun, Lord of the silent, who pays to heed to the voice of the poor. When I call to you in my distress you come to rescue me.
Stela recovered from Deir-el Medina

According to the myth, Amun originally is the member of "Ogdoad", or the "group of eight". In this creation myth of Hemopolis, there were four groups of creative Gods: Nun and Naunet(Water);Heh and Hauhet(Infinity);Kek and Kauket( Darkness); Amun and Amaunet( Hiddenness).
Amun appears as a Theban local God with his consort Goddess Amaunet. At the time of the 11th Dynasty, four Pharaohs took the name of Amun. Within a century and half Amungradually replaced the old Theban God Montu as the dominant God. Untill the time of New Kingdom, he was promoted to a position of supereme God of Egyptian pantheon. In Thebes, he was associated with a new systerm: his wife Mut and his son Khonsu. In ancient Egypt, people called him asha renu which meanings that Amun rich in names.
Consealed God:
In Egyptian myth, Amun stood for the feature of Hiddenness. Put it in this way, sometimes, Aum was decribed as "mysterious one" or "invisible", suggesting that his original nature would be the invisible power of wind.
Creator God :
As I said above, Amun in the myth of Hemopolis was part of the creative Gods. So, from some stands, he can be treated as a creative God.
Solar God:
In the Book of the Dead, Amun is called" eldest of the gods of the eastern sky", an epithet reflecting the both his primeval character and solar-associated nature. In a hymn to Amun said that he raises as Horakhty, fusing the hidden one with the sun.
Fertility God:
Amun sometimes was associated was the fertility God Min, so he was also called Amun-Min.
Warrior God:
It seems likely that the features of Montu were utilised by Amun. The Theban ruler of the 13th Dynasty made great effort against the Hyksos. And it was Amun who received victories and praise when finally the Hyksos was driven away form the Egyptian land.
King of the Gods:
Pyramids Texts 1540 states that" you have come, O King, as the son of Geb upon the throne of Amun." And the first epithet of "King of the Gods" appears on the 12th Dynasty.
Universal Gods:
Amun is a great God who exists in all thing, unlike other Gods who just simplely stand for one aspect of universal life, Amun extremely can be seen as the One who reflect every explanation of the university.

"Mighty one,foremost of the Godnesses
Ruler in Heaven, Queen on Earth...
All the gods are under her command."

From an inscription at Philae

In ancient Egyptian, Isis was called Aset. She was the most important deities in Egypt's pantheon.
In the remote mythology, the origin of Aset was unknown. No record had ever been found about her birth palce or any other info related to her origin.Dislike Amun the all Mighty, or Osiris her husband, or Re the sun God who had the personal worshipping centre or temple, Isis was a minor part orincorporated figure in the temple. But, what was undeniable was the importance of Isis in borth religion and earthli life. In the Pyramid Texts, she appeared 80 times many. She was definitely a protective Godness that both Gods and people neesed very much!
Sister-wife of Osiris:
As known to all that Isis was the beloved wife of Osiris, the first King of Egypt.A ccording the myth of Ancient Egypt, both of them fell in love when they still in Nut' womb. After, they became the ruler of Both Lands and taught the Egyptian how to grow crops and how to fish...and the truth was Osiris was the envy of his evil brother Seth. Finally, he tool action to dismember Osiris, and threw his body away. After the death of his husband, the royal wife determined to find his body and resurrected him. However, again, Osiris was murdered, and threw him even fat from his wife. The end of the story was of course a happpy ending. Osiris held the throne of underworld and his son became the King of Egypt. In this myth the important position of Isis was obvious. It was her found his bsdy and resurreced him, it was her who gave birth to Horus.
Mother and protector of Horus:
As the story above said, she gave birth to Horus.
Mother of the King:
In Abcient Egypt, the King was considered the Horus in the Palace. He was the living Horus. So Isis was symbolised as the mother of the King. As early as the Pyramid Text said that the King drank milf from the breast of his mother Isis.
Goddess of cosmic associations:
Although was not very clear that she was directly linked to the cosmos, but she still had some associations of the cosmic myths. She assumed as the Eye of Re and also she was venerated was moom goddess. What is more vital that she was epual as the Star of Sirius while Osiris as Orion.
Great of magic:
Magic is central to Isis's many roles, for her power Osiris was resurrected. And also with her magic power, she gained the secret name of the Great Sun God Re, and became the Goddess of Heaven.
Mourner, sustainer and protector of the deceased

Renaissance: the Fusion of Traditions

Renaissance, a rebirth and an age of rediscovering man and the world, always attracts people’s attention from antiquity until now. The names of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rapheal become the most famous in people’s mind. It is true that the Renaissance was a golden age when the connection to the classical world was re-created, but more importantly, the Renaissance gave birth to the true European culture, which stays unique in the world and also severs as a tie binding people in Europe together.
Surprisingly, such a revolutionary event would happen in the age of Medieval, an age equal with Christendom. In fact the relationship between Renaissance and Medieval was quite close and maybe the Middle Age provided nutrition to the Renaissance, both economically and spiritually. So the Renaissance was not as modern as people think but was quite Middle Age.
Spiritually, Middle Age was dominated by one religion only—Christianity. With the effort paid by churches, Christianity permeated into the daily life of Europeans. And it did so deep that even in the Renaissance; the trace of this religion could be found. People of Middle Age received the calendar from church, heard some stories from the church men about Bible or saints, and celebrated biblical festivals. They were so used to the tradition of Christianity that it was just like a brand in their mind.
Economically, with the development of agricultural tools, a number of people were freed from land, meanwhile the weakened Feudalism and the expanse of towns made a suitable environment for the change. People wanted some new business and new life. Gradually trade was flourished, and people became rich. And once people were contented about their material life they would turn to a higher level. With the finance of rich people, art, education was renewed and the minds of people were more active.
Especially in Italy the commercial environment was second to none, as it served as a trade center of east and west. The coast cities were filled with goods and traders. Notably the banking business in Italy helped the prosperity of the economy. And by lending money to different authorities, the banking families became powerful and collected enough political power. Besides their situation just fit the political environment in Italy.
Due tot the less influence of Feudalism, the political structure was very innovative at that time. The people in Italy revived the idea of republic and put it into the practice. The states in Italy kept growing bigger by conquering neighbors, at last a few was survived and became stronger: Florence, Milan, Venice and so on. But in fact those cities were dominated by rich commercial families who controlled the government. When compared those rulers to the traditional ones, they were highly educated. What’s more, to support this system, governors needed more educated people who knew how to govern well. They eagerly wanted the knowledge from classical heritage and also to legitimate their system.
With the fusion of different elements: Christianity, heritage from Middle Age, new economy, and the revived passion for the classical knowledge, the prosperity and social stability made the Renaissance possible. And the scholars from Greece who brought enormous memories from classical times speeded up the rebirth.
With the flourish of classical heritages, people in Italy were changing: they concentrated on the earthly life more than the city of God, they celebrated the beauty and dignity of man more than the glory of the God, and they paid more attention to the ability of man than to the sin of man. They praised the man, questioned man, exalted man, and placed him in the middle of the foreground. Those ideas spread quickly but the power of church and Christianity remained powerful and fundamental. In fact, those innovative ideas were totally within the framework of Christianity: God was still the only one who created man and world, but what was different was this time man could use his own ability to understand the intelligence of God and the beauty and dignity of man and God.
Holding those ideas, art gradually changed which perfectly reflected the fusion of Christianity and classical ideas. The artist who wanted to represent the true world used different ways of achieving this goal. The most innovative change in the painting was the usage of prospective. Artists who by using this technique created a world in reality took advantage of 3-D. Those mathematical method really shocked people in Italy. The Holy Trinity, which by the artist Masaccio really astonished people who walked into the church, they did not expected to see such a revolutionary scene, the symbolic figures who were similar with each other was gone, instead of that was a special picture in which each characters were distinct. Later the technique of perspective was widely applied into private painting which showed more individualism. Since the invention of prospective, the painting was no longer symbolism but a reflection of the beauty of man in the world. Different types of beauties were understood by artist and then presented: Michelangelo’s strengthen, Rapheal’s softness and Leonardo da Vinci’s scientific desire.

The most famous painting, which more clearly showed the fusion of traditions, was by Botticelli, the Birth of Venus. Botticelli portrayed a pagan myth in which the center was not the Virgin or the Christ but the Goddess of beauty. Surprisingly, people did not feel strange when looking at this picture; because they felt something they were familiar. The Venus has the quality of the Virgin; she carries the message of motherhood through her gesture.

This fusion would be more popular in the later portrays of persons, they were all reflections of the fusion of traditions.
The Renaissance saw the rebirth of classical heritages, the derisory of man and the birth of true European culture. Until toady, people all around the world will queue before the masterpieces to just glance and to feel the legacy past down by that golden age. Renaissance will never be a remote memory but will continue to serve as a mental tie binding people in Europe.

Origin of Osiris

An Internet friend asked me whether I have heard about a book named: the Golden Bough. And I said:” Wh…What?” Obviously I have never heard about this name before. And I thought it is just a novel dealing with some love or other ( who knows?) issues.
Until one day she posted something about this book on the forum, and then I knew that this is an academic book with a very serious topic. The name: the Golden Bough is from a Greek myth, and this book is several decades older than me. The book is bout the research of ancient magic and religion, as well as the relationship between these two.
She posted a very interesting discussion question, here I just copy the words down from the forum:
Here she mentioned the characteristic of ancient Egyptian God Osiris. In the book it says that Osiris was originally a paddy God. Before the magic being made religion, people who lived in an uncivilized world, considered that the paddy God died every fall and reborn in each spring. And this can explain the reason why later in the myth of Osiris he died and resurrected.
In the post she regarded the content above can be a reasonable explanation of the Osiris myth. And I agree that. It is very possible.
We all know that Osiris is regarded as the god of dearth, living and fertility. Obviously he has the quality of being a paddy God, which from the very fist time of the history of Egypt. At that time, due to the importance of the crops, people thought there was a God who charged growth of the crop. As the book said, the God maybe died for the next year’s harvest. And in the later development of the myth, Osiris, the paddy God was exalted to a very important position which contained the features of crop God and others.
But in fact the origin of Osiris is still in dispute, even scholars can not be sure. The paddy God origin is a very strong explanation, however there maybe other origins. I searched the internet and found some article which consider another saying: Osiris was a legendary remote King whose tale gradually became a famous tale. And I think this saying is reasonable, because Egyptian had the tradition of deifying someone. So maybe in a very remote time of Egyptian history there was a king who discovered the crops, but was killed by someone, maybe his relatives. But due to some reasons he was said that he had resurrected from death. Like the tale of Jesus, we are not sure whether or not there was a Jesus, whether or not he had resurrected. All are not easy to say to judge.

Writing Spring Festival Scrolls

This was my first time of going to the Global Cafe, and sadly this was because of the forceful request of my roommate. She told me that we could write soem Chinese Spring Festival Scrolls there, and it did interest me a little. So I went there.
As a child, my father taught me the Chinese Calligraphy for about five or six years. But when I entered the secondary school, the practice ceased. So far I can remember, I have not picked up the brush for about... I do not know, but it must be very long.
On Tuesday, 6:30, I went the Global Cafe. The time I reached there was a little bit late, it had already begun. And my roommate and I found a place, picked up some paper and two brushes. To be honest, I even did not know how to begin the construction of the scroll. Since I have been in Hong Kong for a year and half, seldom did I use Chinese characters for writing. So sometimes I even could not think the character up. Well I chose the simplest charaters, I was quite sure that I could write them well, but the result turned opposite. The characters were so weird under my brush, and it was very hard for me to admit this fact. Anyway, I tried my best hard to finish the scrolls and I did, but very ugly.
